A new Zelda is always an event. For 31 years now, the series has regularly rhymed with excellence, offering players absolutely unforgettable moments. Nintendo opens the curtain on The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Mobile, an incredibly ambitious episode that returns to the roots of the series… with a success that defies imagination!
Despite its age, the Zelda series is easy to define: Adventure games where the player clearly plays the role of the hero, braving challenges to save Princess Zelda and the Kingdom of Hyrule, with rare exceptions. Link is the avatar of courage and self-sacrifice, regularly making people forget his small size by his exploits in battle. But the Zelda series is above all the idea of a unique experience in which we discover a world to its very depths, meeting colourful characters. The concept of advancing towards the unknown and of a long and fascinating quest was already what made the success of the first opus. Players were left to their own devices, with no direction to take and no visible barriers. While subsequent episodes often offered more structured storylines, containing the player in a narrative line, Breath of the Wild takes an incredible step backwards. A barrier-free adventure that automatically redefines the term “open world”. But let’s go into a little more detail.
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Mobile Open World
As the various trailers explain, Link wakes up from a sleep that will have lasted 100 years in desolate places. Only an old man gives him some information… Visiting the area, we realize that we are on a wide plateau from which we can’t get off. The only way to get out of it, to recover the four treasures hidden in sanctuaries and then to get back the Paravoile, which allows us to glide. The treasures in question are specific powers: square or round bombs that can be triggered from a distance, a magnet that allows you to move large metal objects, the possibility of creating gigantic blocks of ice from bodies of water and finally the possibility of blocking time for certain mechanisms. You get all of these powers for the first two hours of play, which gives you a glimpse of how quickly the developers wanted you to have access to your full range of motion.
Because even if you’re stuck on this tutorial board at the beginning of the adventure, you already understand the great freedom of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Mobile game design. You can literally go wherever you want, without any restriction in your horizontal or vertical movements. Walk up to a wall and Link automatically climbs it! It’s as simple as that. If an endurance gauge forces you to pay attention to the size of what you want to climb, you can greatly influence the maximum distance depending on the inclination of the wall you are climbing, for example. From the very beginning of the game, you can climb whatever you want with a minimum of strategy in your ascent, and there are many ways to temporarily or permanently increase your endurance bar. Believe me, it’s quite something to realize how free you are with your movements. It’s all the more remarkable because the world we live in is a real ode to exploration! The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Mobile offers magnificent panoramas and breathtaking plans, so much so that we sometimes stay a good minute on top of a cliff to contemplate our environment! The valleys and plains, the wind blowing in the grass, the incredible light effects, this new Zelda offer a masterful show. However, it is obvious that the title suffers from some technical problems, such as aliasing or clipping, not to mention some slowdowns. It is not uncommon to see the framerate drop, sometimes drastically, in forest areas for example. However, these problems are quickly forgotten and have little impact on the overall gambling experience. Never before has a game offered us such a visual orgasm for such a vast universe on a portable console! In fact, even on home consoles, there are few words on the scale of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Mobile.
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Mobile world is absolutely gigantic. The second you step off your plateau, the universe opens up entirely to you, and the least we can say is that there is a terrifying side to being offered miles and miles of places to explore. It will take you tens of hours just to walk the roads, and we are not yet talking about deserts, mountains, plains, caves, or the gigantic content of the title. Unlike Metroidvania-type games, you will never be told “no, you can’t pass” or “you need this object to enter these places”. The environments are varied and the magic happens at every moment! But precisely, the question that everyone is asking is the following: What are we doing in this universe?
Advanced And Dungeons
The structure of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Mobile is very particular. You have several main quests that you can follow at the same time. From the very beginning of the game, nothing prevents you from rushing to the castle to try to face Ganon. There are no script barriers in any case. On the other hand, expect to die anyway, because you’re not properly prepared! And that’s exactly what the other main (yet optional) quests are for. Not only do they expand the story and explain what happened 100 years ago, but they also allow you to gain additional powers, which are very useful for survival. By the way, note that voice-acting now helps the narration, at least for the most important characters.
But the good thing is that even if you decide to follow one of the main quests, the watchword is still freedom. Not only can you move through several quests at once as you wish, but within a single quest you can do everything in any order you like. This is precisely the case of the different dungeons in the game, each one assigned to a tribe, and whose course is rather singular, especially for the regulars of the series. Still without spoilers, let’s just say that they are much more focused on thinking than fighting, some of them oozing with ingenuity. Since we’re talking about reflection, the sanctuaries are a novel dungeon format, much shorter and much more numerous than usual. There are about a hundred of them, often requiring the player to master the various mechanisms of the game, with rewards for the most gifted. Not only does each shrine also act as a teleport point on the map, which is essential for a game of this magnitude (yes, it’s much bigger than Skyrim, for example), but completing them also helps to improve Link’s life and stamina gauge, little by little.
The most incredible thing about all this is that I haven’t talked about the fights yet. And for good reason, they are less numerous than what the series has offered us so far. Fewer in number, but also more tactical, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Mobile is clearly not lacking in difficulty. One must always be careful about one’s position and movements in the face of sometimes unpredictable enemies. The handling is fortunately fluid, allowing us to change weapon or type of arrows in a few tenths of a second via an active pause. Moreover, on this subject, the title marks the blow by totally changing its weapon system with the principle of disposable weapons. You will spend your time collecting your opponents’ weapons and will have to choose what you keep with you, forcing you to be efficient with all types of weapons. Of course, this episode offers many tough challenges such as hidden bosses, for example. As you’ve already heard, Breath of the Wild is full of surprises.
And that’s what The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Mobile is all about. The eternal feeling of discovery. It would be difficult to describe the countless moments of surprise that will punctuate your adventure. Despite the density of the world, you will be rewarded each time you follow your own path, climb a hill that seemed to be useless or snoop around an apparently deserted area. Whether it’s a trunk, a little puzzle or more interesting surprises, there’s always something to do, not to mention the shovelful of side quests given by the game’s many NPCs. For yes, Breath of the Wild has its villages, with characters that sometimes act differently depending on the time of day. This density, and the beauty of the Kingdom of Hyrule, make Breath of the Wild the most exhilarating gaming experience.
I have a lot more to tell you, and yet, this is where I’m going to stop. Have I told you everything? No, far from it. But in order for Breath of the Wild to be as unique for you as it was for me, I need to make sure that you experience it in the same way. You have to discover for yourself what is the best adventure game since Zelda Ocarina of Time… that it surpasses! There is no doubt about it, Breath of the Wild is a masterpiece that is already part of the video game pantheon.
