With Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone as its standard-bearer, the royal battle is directly associated with guns, with areas that slowly shrink until there is only one left. But how about a round, colourful BR, where the only possible attack is to gently grab your opponents? And where the goal is to reach the end of totally crazy races inspired by Takeshi’s Castle and Total Wipeout? This game is Fall Guys Mobile, a very catchy title, a real breath of fresh air for a genre whose possibilities seemed (already) outdated.
Fall Guys Mobile has only two things left of the Battle Royale name: the competition with a large number of players (60 in this case) and the ultimate victory to whoever manages to be the last survivor. And the game has the merit – and this is the first point in its favour – of extending the range of possibilities in terms of large-scale online games (with the addition of a mainstream approach). Because if going through totally crazy levels is already a pleasure in itself, doing it with about fifty other people who stumble and bounce around increases the experience tenfold. And you can take our word for it, there’s plenty of fun activities in Fall Guys Mobile. Especially thanks to the various challenges offered by the title.
Total Wipeout
These tests were inspired by well-known shows (Total Wipeout in mind) which – as you can imagine – must have been a challenge to the imagination of the developers. Fall Guys Mobile thus has a little over twenty challenges divided into four categories: races (with its lot of treadmills, giant balls and obstacles, where the first to arrive will be qualified), team (where you must obtain the highest number of points with your team or risk being eliminated), survival (the slightest fall is fatal) and logic (remember the location of platforms so as not to fall into the void). A game, which lasts between 10 and 15 minutes, is divided into five rounds. After each round, the losers gradually leave the session until the final.
Discovering these tests in the first few hours is a delight. One will be pleasantly surprised by some of them, especially the team and survival events, which intelligently vary the dynamics of the game and allow the title to prove that it has more to offer than “fun races”. Especially since Fall Guys Mobile has the good reflex to limit the player’s frustration by rarely imposing races, often quite unpredictable because of crazy obstacles and interactions between players, for the final and semi-final, preferring, for example, the survival events, where it is precision (and a little bit of luck) that will allow you to win.
Fall Guys Mobile Lack Of Content
Despite everything, and this is probably the main reproach we’ll make to Fall Guys Mobile, we quickly went around the available challenges, the title proposing fixed and well-thought levels (and not randomly generated as we might have thought). What the game loses in diversity, it nevertheless gains in precision: the level design of each level sticks perfectly to the imposed challenges and can reserve surprises (like shortcuts) after several sessions. In any case, redundancy sets in quickly, especially if you fall back on the same events several times, the choice of which ones to choose is left to chance between each round.
But Fall Guys Mobile fate is not set in stone. The title is based on a season system that will occasionally add to the content. Moreover, the game leaves plenty of room for the unexpected and improvisation, thanks in particular to the physics of the characters who quickly jostle and stumble, enough to make you smile even if you know the levels inside out. Without forgetting that to vary the pleasures, the title can be played by several people online (no room on the programme), even if, as it stands, it still lacks visual indicators to easily spot your friends in the middle of the game.
Fall Guys Mobile Gameplay
Fall Guys Mobile gameplay is as simple as its concept: the player has three keys, one for jumping, one for diving forward (useful for catching a jump that’s too short or dodging an obstacle narrowly), and one for grabbing a ledge or your neighbour’s hip. Physically, this is a far cry from a Human Fall Flat, although the avatar will easily trip if mishandled. So you’ll have to be careful where you step.
Technique And Personalisation
To stand out from the crowd, players will still be able to count on the numerous customisation options that mark out their progress. Each move up the ranks will bring back items (victory animations, skin colour, clothing) and also credits, which can be spent in a dedicated shop. For the most impatient, the title also proposes to use real money. It should be noted that all purchases, made by the sweat of the brow or with the help of a wallet, only concern cosmetic items.
Finally, a small technical point: we encountered some connection problems during our sessions, in solo as well as in multi (understandable considering the age of the title). A few display bugs or characters falling indefinitely also happened, but nothing that could tarnish Fall Guys Mobile coating, with a nice DA, honest technique and music really in tune.
